Bickley Park School
Sticking around: 20 years of drumming up the fun!
Keeping The Beat.
As a dedicated drum teacher with a passion for music education, I have spent the past two decades honing my craft and inspiring young musicians at various institutions across London.
None are closer to my heart than Bickley Park School in Bromley, where I’ve had the privilege of teaching drums for twenty fulfilling years, and counting!
At Bickley Park School, I foster a nurturing environment where the young students not only learn technical skills, but work through the grade exam syllabus each term.
Watching a pupils face light up with excitement as they master a new rhythm is a joy like no other. These moments of achievement and growth are what drive me to continually innovate and improve my teaching methods. It's incredibly satisfying to see students who started with little to no knowledge of drumming. develop into skilled musicians with a deep appreciation for music.
Equipment at Bickley Park School
At Bickley Park School I teach an acoustic and elctric kit from time to time, which I think is an important mix, because it's great for pupils to also get used to working on e-kits too.
For practical reasons e-kits remain the best choice for young drummers when starting out, because of the obvious noise benefits of working with them, and the built in eductional tools that most e-kits offer like a metronome, which are essential for any drummer as they seek to master the basic skills.
Teaching Approch
Working with drummers aged from 7 to 13 requires a versatile teaching approach, as each age group brings different levels of skill, understanding, and attention span. For the younger students, it's essential to incorporate engaging and interactive methods, such as using games and fun exercises, to keep their interest and enthusiasm high.
As they grow older, the focus shifts to more structured lessons that emphasize technique, music theory, and performance skills. Adapting to the individual needs and learning styles of each student is crucial, ensuring that each pupil receives the support and challenge necessary to thrive.
This adaptability not only fosters a more effective learning environment, but also helps to build a strong, supportive learning structure for each student, encouraging their continued passion for drumming.
As a drum teacher at Bickley Park School, my goal has always been to cultivate not only proficient drummers but also well-rounded individuals who carry the discipline, creativity, and joy of music into all areas of their lives.
By blending traditional teaching methods with modern technology, such as e-kits, I ensure that each student receives a comprehensive musical education tailored to their unique needs and interests. The success of my students, both in their exams and personal growth, is a testament to the supportive and dynamic learning environment at the school.
Looking ahead, I am excited about the future and the opportunity to inspire even more young musicians. The journey of each student from novice to accomplished drummer is a deeply rewarding experience that continually fuels my passion for teaching.
At Bickley Park School, I remain committed to providing high-quality music education that not only develops technical skills but also instills a lifelong love for music. It is a privilege to be part of this vibrant music department, and I'm excited to help many more budding young musicians reach there full potential on this fantastic instrument.
